More Texas entrances

This place...
 is appropriately named...
(Well, hello to you, too!)
I liked this "A" display.
And even though this place seemed to have about 4 different fencing styles going on, I think it works!

Whistler babies

Many of you have been waiting for black-bellied whistling ducklings to show up. Well, at the end of May, a parental pair brought their brood (I think there were 17!) to the pond. These ducklings were a week or two old, by the looks of it, and the parents only kept them here one day, then moved through. I'm totally okay with that. Between snapping turtles and swimming dogs, I'd much rather they move to safer ponds and creeks to mature.

These photos were taken in early morning sun. The angle of light makes the adults look a bit plastic (I'm sure it had nothing to do with my lack of photography skill). These are not the best of the photos I took of this bunch (thankfully), but I thought I'd break their visit into several posts. Consider this set a behavioral study. Without further ado, here's the first installment of black-bellied whistling ducklings for 2012.
Love this line-up.

Rest stop.

The kids are ready to move on, even if the parents aren't.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em...

I like how one parent swims it while the other hoofs it, keeping the babies in the middle.

Destination reached.

Time for preening.

Both parents preening and all the babies, too.

Babies preening under pink parental feet.

Stick with me and I promise the next set will be better photos.

Yellow Warbler

As far as I can tell, this fellow is a bit outside his summer territory. Per my Crossley ID Guide and the Cornell Lab site, both show Texas as too far south for its breeding season. This is the first year I've ever seen one here, so was thrilled he stayed too far south and stuck around for a few days.
 First few glimpses.
He returned a second day so I could chase him again among the leaves.

 Quick little bugger!
